A name is not enough
Rights systems need to distinguish a person from a name, an alias from a legal identity, and a writer from the work they helped create. CISAC's IPI system exists to identify interested parties and their roles, while separate identifiers such as ISWC identify musical works.[1][2]
Different spellings do not automatically become different people in every modern system. They do, however, create ambiguity when the surrounding identifiers, roles or ownership data are absent or inconsistent.
Matching is an evidence problem
A useful identity record connects the legal name, credited names, aliases, IPI identifiers, society affiliations, publisher relationships and the dates for which those relationships apply. A useful work record separately connects title variants, ISWC, writers and controlled shares. Recording identifiers such as ISRC then need their own supported link to the work.
The UK industry metadata agreement states that incomplete or inaccurate metadata can delay or prevent payment.[3] That does not mean every delayed royalty is caused by a spelling difference. It means identity and rights data are part of the allocation evidence.
Unmatched, unclaimed and suspense are not synonyms
Organisations use these terms in specific ways. The MLC, for example, distinguishes royalties that are unmatched, royalties linked to works but not claimed, and amounts held because of disputes, reviews or legal issues.[4]
Black box is also not a new nickname for suspense. It is a broad industry term whose meaning varies by context. Precise investigation starts by recording the organisation's actual category and rules.
A practical identity control
- Keep the legal name and every credited alias together.
- Record IPI identifiers and society affiliations with effective dates.
- Keep writer, performer, publisher and rights-owner roles distinct.
- Record work identifiers separately from recording identifiers.
- Retain the source and date for every ownership assertion.
- Log conflicts instead of silently choosing one version.
Consistency helps, but the goal is not one spelling everywhere at any cost. The goal is a traceable identity map that lets systems and investigators understand why records belong together.
