The current official position
The MLC's September 2026 report gives an adjusted historical royalty total of $397,286,419.01. It reports $238,722,409.65 distributed, or 60.09 percent of that adjusted total.[2]
The arithmetic difference is about $158.6 million. It should not automatically be labelled unmatched. The pool changes through matching, claims, adjustments and distributions, and some money can be matched but not yet distributed.
What historical means here
The MLC uses historical unmatched royalties for blanket-licence uses before 1 January 2021 that digital services transferred under the Music Modernization Act process.[4] This is a specific United States mechanical-royalty context, not a total for every country or right type.
Why the number moves
The MLC continues to match usage to musical works, process registrations and claims, and distribute royalties. The Copyright Office describes the statutory route for accrued royalties where copyright owners cannot initially be identified or located.[3]
As of the September 2026 dashboard, The MLC said it had not begun equitable market-share distributions of remaining historical royalties.[1] That status can change, so the dashboard date belongs beside any figure quoted.
What the figures do not prove
They do not support a global estimate of unclaimed royalties. They do not establish that the entire balance is recoverable by one class of rightsholder. They also do not measure neighbouring rights, public-performance income or mechanical systems outside the United States.
The operating lesson
A rights team should record the period, right type, territory, source date and category before using a headline number. Historical, unmatched, unclaimed, on hold and undistributed are not interchangeable. The quality of the decision depends on keeping those distinctions intact.
